approval ratings, taking a major beating in the latest poll released overnight. >> he is hitting new record lows, as frustration mounts over not just the rollout of obama care but the new health care law overall. the abc news/"washington post" poll puts the president obama's overall job approval rating at just 42%. down 15% points this year. 55 disapprove, a new record high for his presidency. and the president's other ratings are tumbling, as well. 46% see him as a strong leader. 47% see him as honest and trustworthy. and 47% say he understands americans' problems. fueling the negativity is the botched rollout of obama care. americans by nearly 2-1, disapprove of his handling of the rollout. and opposition to the affordable care act is at an all-time high, 57%. last week, the president said he didn't know the extent of the problems with the obama care website when it launched. >> i'm accused of a lot of things.

but i don't think i'm stupid enough to go around saying this is going to be like shopping on amazon or travelocity. >> reporter: and this week, more assurances from the white house. >> the goal here is obviously to get people through the system. and by the system, we don't mean the website. but through the system, and therefore allow them to enroll in a plan. >> reporter: an estimated 7 million americans have already been told they're losing their current health plans. this morning, there are signs of a fix. sources close to the website repair effort say the pace of enrollment on healthcare.gov has nearly doubled since the end of october. software engineers are resolving more than 200 of the 600 defects that have all but derailed that website. now, as of last week, the number of people who successfully enrolled is 50,000. that's nearly twice the number from last month. but only one-tenth of the administration's target. now, to our other major story. the aftermath of the powerful tornadoes in the midwest. take a look at the damage from

just one twister in illinois. so many homes obliterated. another image shows the incredible line between utter destruction and homes completely untouched. the death toll now stands at eight. but officials say it could have been much worse without early warnings and storm sirens. here's abc's tahman bradley. >> reporter: across the midwest, the shock is beginning to set in. residents are picking through debris, finding the remains of their gutted homes. >> i have four church members lose home. >> every minute, i turn around, i'm crying. i don't know. i don't have a house. >> reporter: the ferocious late-season outbreak of tornadoes and rough weather, stretched across 12 states. at least eight people were killed. this is a picture of washington, illinois, before the tornado. and this is what it looks like today. tornadoes in november are rare. the u.s. sees an average of only 50 twisters only in november. the u.s. got that and much more

in about 12 hours. >> this is the deadliest series of tornadoes illinois has ever had in the month of november. >> reporter: in indiana, tornadoes caused injuries and widespread damage through 12 counties. in michigan, one man died when a tree fell on his car. despite all of the devastation, we're learning miraculous stories of survival. accurate weather forecasts. and those timely tornado warnings may have saved lives. in kokomo, indiana, marcy may and 14 others took cover in a bathroom. >> literally shut the bathroom door and the roof peeled away. >> reporter: chris lancaster watched his home torn away, returned to find only rubble. but a miracle. >> daddy's got you, baby. >> reporter: a furry life spared, giving one devastated family hope. tahman bradley, abc news, washington. george zimmerman, spending the night in a florida jail after being arrested again.

this time on assault charges. this is his latest run-in with the law, since being acquitted of shooting trayvon martin. zimmerman's girlfriend call 911, claiming he was threatening her with a shotgun during an argument. >> she was able to work her way to the front door of the residence. and call 911. at that time, he pushed her out of the front of the residence. and then, barricaded the door with some furniture. >> that argument happened inside the home the couple shares. zimmerman faces a judge later today. breaking news overseas right now. two massive explosions rocked beirut, lebanon, a short time ago. the bombs going off in front of the iranian embassy. there could be more than a dozen dead. the blast heavily damaged the embassy and other buildings. no group immediately claimed responsibility. we'll stay on top of this breaking story and bring you the very latest. now, a chilling look this morning at the moment of impact in that deadly plane crash in central russia. airport security video capturing the final seconds of the flight sunday night.

showing the boeing 737 plunging into the ground in a near-vertical position. all 50 people onboard were killed on the plane's second attempt at landing. investigators are still combing through the charred wreckage to find out what went wrong. and security had been stepped up in paris after a gunman opened fire in a newspaper office. surveillance video shows the man entering the office and pointing the gun. a photographer was critically wounded in that attack. detectives say they have linked the suspect with three other shootings around paris. storm victims in the philippines are still crowding at airports waiting to be evacuated from the hardest-hit areas. the giant c-130s bringing in relief supplies and taking children and the sick and elderly to safer places. the government says it is managing to feed about 4.5 million people every day. but the need is still vast. a bitter dispute over gay marriage has sparked a public family feud between the two daughters of former vice president dick cheney. liz cheney reaffirmed her

during a campaign stop in wyoming where she is running for the u.s. senate. now, mary cheney, who is married to a woman, fired back, saying liz is on the wrong side of history. the parents issued a statement saying they are pained to see their daughters' disagreement out in the open. well, today, thousands of people are proving abraham lincoln wrong. on this date 150 years ago, he said the world would long remember his gettysburg address. >> it lasted only two minutes. it's now considered one of the greatest speeches in history. a ceremony at gettysburg today will commemorate with a re-enactor reciting those famous words. turning to the weather now. it will be sunny and cool for that ceremony in gettysburg today. heavy rain from washington to northern california. up to two feet of mountain snow in the cascades. and a foot in the northern rockies. light, lake-effect snow for parts of upstate new york and western pennsylvania. a windy day in new england. >> 40s in chicago to new york. 60s from atlanta to new orleans. mostly 50s and 60s across the rockies. still ahead, an important story for women. doctors have discovered a new risk for anyone taking the pill.

nation." which aired in canada. you uh can hear much more from mayor rob ford, later on this morning on "good morning america." a zookeeper at the national zoo is recovering after a brutal attack by a zebra. he was bitten at least three times before he was pulled out of the enclosure. a gazelle broke its neck and died. zoo officials are trying to figure out why the worker was in the enclosure with the zebra, which is against zoo rules. administrators at princeton has decided to offer a vaccine not offered in the u.s. the first doses will be available next month. do one-third of us really need to take medication to lower cholesterol? two medical groups recommending that one-third of all adults over the age of 40 stake statins. that's overkill. critics admit the new guidelines are a big improvement on the old

live from the kgo-tv broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good tuesday morning at 4:28. today bring us rain the. >> we will find out more about the rain. mike, what do you have? >> i have rain in the north bay and the reporting station in santa rosa is saying a light rain. that is where we are seeing a little bit of radar runs. just to the southwest of live doppler 7 hd. we will put this in motion the last few hours we a batch moving through. we have another batch of light rain off the coast moving through. i am thinking north of the bay bridge through the morning commute will be the best chance for steady rain. the rest of us could get a scattered sprinkle or a scattered rain but up north is where we will see the bulk of rain. lowest visibility is in santa

rosa at three miles. not too bad. today, everyone is going to get rain headed into the day and the afternoon hours. it will be mild. mid-50's to mid-60's. now the dry commute. >> mike, so far so good. as we look behind me no accidents to report yet. we have green conditions so we are at top speeds in most areas of the bay. as i take you into the east bay we have a project in the works that will last until 9:00 this morning. it is headed along the east side of 580 headed between greenville and north flynn road. there is a little bit of slowing. look at the green patch indicating where we have drizzle falling. pictures of the bay bridge toll plaza headed into san francisco it is dry. we will keep you updated how it is doing in a little bit.

>> thank you, leyla gulen. the bay area is waking up to something it hasn't had in two months. the rain. it will be significant and potentially dangerous. amy hollyfield is in the north bay where it is a wet commute. amy? >> yes, kristen, we are dealing with a heavy drizzle. we drove here from the east bay. it was dry until he bit marin county. then we started noticing the drizzle. it is not a ahead rain but it is wet. the c.h.p. is worried about what this will mean for the roads especially highway 101. there is a lost construction going on in the north bay especially between santa rosa and marin county and they say there is little room for error. >> we will be bringing up a last oil and fluids from the roadway so it will be extra slick. we want give people heads up to give yourself extra time.
